HM17 E 5155 1992 Encyclopedia of Sociology -- 4 volume set; A-Z listing of 370 entries. The compilers’ attempt to cover the important concepts and subfields included in sociology (many of which were new or recent) results in some topics being very comprehensive, while others have more specific content. The targeted audience includes sociologists of all focuses and other scholars, professionals who need information about topics in sociology, and students. Since encyclopedias are “gold mines for students,” central concern was “that articles could be read and understood by younger and uninitiated persons looking for a first introduction to a sociological topic. There are, of course, entries that are exceptions, where a “preexisting knowledge base is in order” for it to be fully understood by the reader.
HM17 S 86 1994 Survey of Social Science: Sociology Series -- 5 vol. set; Broad, yet
comprehensive, this set is “designed to provide the general reader with insight into topics in the social sciences that are often accessible only to academicians and experts in the field.” Averaging six pages in length, the 338 articles follow the familiar Magill format. They begin with ready-reference information stating the type of sociology and particular field(s) of study to which the article’s topic belongs. Next, a brief summary describes the topic’s significance; key terms are then listed and defined. To aid the reader in finding information, the main text of each article is divided into three sections: “Overview,” “Applications,” and “Context.”

HM 425 S 63 2000 Sociology Basics -- This slim two volume set is a “distillation
of the articles of broadest interest that appeared in the five-volume Survey of Social Science: Sociology Series (above). This distillation takes the original intention of supplying information in a quickly retrievable format and easy-to-understand style one step further. From the original 338 articles, the 90 topics that cover the most fundamental issues and concepts in sociology have been selected.
HN 28 E 53 1994 Encyclopedia of Social History -- Since social history has
become one of the key sources of expanding knowledge about human social behavior, an encyclopedia on the subject was needed. Here you will find articles on groups of people, on the activities and beliefs of the working class, racial and ethnic minorities, women, youth, etc. “In dealing with social, gender, and age groupings, social historians at once seek to show the rich histories of these groups, arguing that they are not merely passive recipients of orders and guidelines from above, and to demonstrate how the values and behaviors of these groups affect the larder historical record.” Every aspect of human behavior, from sexuality to crime, family life, and leisure activities are covered.
HN 57 E 58 1993 Encyclopedia of American Social History -- 3 vol. set; this “sixth entry
in the Scribner American Civilization Series, includes essays on the major issues that have dominated historical writing during the past generation. Social history has been variously defined: as history ‘from the bottom up’; as the history of everyday life; or, as the history of groups and the power relationships between them . . .These volumes stand as witness to the richness and complexity with which historians today are thinking about the American past and the American peoples. The range of subjects and approaches is daunting.”
HV 35 S 67 1995 Encyclopedia of Social Work -- 3 vol. set, for this 19th
edition, “the editorial board sought to collect the most current scholarly analyses of practice and research. Reflecting the breadth of the diverse social work profession, this edition also includes more-comprehensive entries than previous editions. Attempting to develop the most comprehensive reference possible,” the editors commissioned long overviews of the major areas of social work. This work also includes biographical information “on people who had a major impact on the profession.”
